Virginia Tech is back for another season of college football and for the first time in almost three decades, they will be coming off of a losing season. To add to the mounting pressure generated with a rebound year, Virginia Tech will enter Bud Fosters final season on the sidelines at Virginia Tech after announcing his retirement effective at the end of the season.

AUG. 31 - AT BOSTON COLLEGE

I have Virginia Tech going 9-3 on the season with an opening weekend victory over Boston College. The Hokies will go on a four game win streak before a tough contest against Miami. That is where adversity fist hits the Hokies this fall. Aside from Miami, I see Virginia Tech falling to Notre Dame and Pittsburgh, who always plays a physical game against the Hokies.

Overall, I think a two-game improvement feels about right. There are still questions about depth at certain spots with this team, and while I like Ryan Willis' potential, he's not a game-changer at quarterback who can make up for a lot of deficiencies elsewhere. I see a lot of 10-2 or 9-3 predictions out there, but I think there's a substantial amount of improvement this team has to show before it's competitive in some of these games, let alone winning them with ease. This season's a step in the right direction, but I'll hold off on predicting it's a huge breakthrough.

Virginia Techs offense has a chance to put up some huge numbers this fall with gunslinger Ryan Willis at the helm. Wide receivers Tre Turner and Damon Hazelton return, as does tight end Dalton Keene and running backs Deshawn McClease and Jalen Holston. Add in former 247Sports Composite four-star prospects Keshawn King and Tayvion Robinson and sure-fire instant impact players, and the offense should be able to move the football this fall.

The Fighting Irish are 347th in turnovers per contest with 9.7. They are 75th in the nation in rebounding with 37.5 boards per contest and 208th in assists per game with 13.2. They are 337th in D-1 in shooting at 40%, while their average scoring margin is 1.5. They rank 171st with 13.0 dimes allowed per game and 320th with 38.5 boards surrendered per contest. They shoot 32% from beyond the arc, which is good for 300th in the country. The Fighting Irish give up 69.2 points per game, which ranks them 122nd in the nation. Their defense surrenders a 43% shooting percentage and a 34% average from behind the 3-point line, ranking them 124th and 176th in those defensive statistics. Notre Dame is 237th in the country with 70.7 points per contest this season. The Fighting Irish are 31st in Division 1 in forcing turnovers with 11.2 per contest.

I dont think Tech is old enough to go on the road and beat Miami or Notre Dame quite yet, and I think it would be hard to pick this team to go 10-2 as well. So for my third loss, I went with Pitt, who beat the Hokies by 30 last year. Even when Tech is clearly better than Pitt, such as 2017, this game always seems to be tough. I suppose a lot of people would pick a loss to UVA, but I wasnt old enough to buy a beer the last time that happened. I need to see it before Ill pick it.
